Associate in Applied Science
in Nursing
Traditional AASN Program
This program is designed for students with no previous
experience as a licensed nurse. Students are required to be certified as a
Nursing Assistant (CNA). The Department of Nursing offers the traditional AASN
program in its entirety at the following campuses:
-
ASU Beebe -
Beebe, AR
-
ASU
Mountain Home-Mt. Home, AR
-
Mid-South Community College-West Memphis, AR
The primary mission of the
Department of Nursing is to prepare students for beginning practice as
registered nurses. Arkansas State University’s nursing programs are committed
to quality education and to meeting the unique needs of northern and eastern
Arkansas and the surrounding area. The Associate in Applied Science in Nursing
(AASN) graduate is prepared to give secondary care, which focuses on illness
that is common and recurrent. Nursing care for this level of illness is well
standardized. Nurses giving this care are not specialized, and are defined as
generalists in attending to illnesses that are usual, readily diagnosed,
and relatively predictable in terms of outcome.
The AASN program is approved
by the Arkansas State Board of Nursing and accredited by the National League for
Nursing, 61 Broadway, New York, NY (212) 989-9393, ext 153. Upon completion of
this program, the student is eligible for the National Council of State Boards
of Nursing Licensing Examination (NCLEX) and, after passing the examination, is
licensed as a Registered Nurse by the state(s) to which application is made.
The professional portion of the curriculum is four semesters in length,
beginning in the spring semester. Students completing this program receive
an Associate of Applied Science in Nursing (AASN) degree.
A
variety of the area health care facilities are utilized for clinical education.
